Your situation sounds really tough. Have you had any luck finding other people to interview. I was also wondering if interviewing Ivan would set an example for the other migrants. I know the main goal is to interview migrants who are in the situation, but I wonder if they see that Ivan interviewed, then they would feel more comfortable.
Nevertheless, I hope that your research is leading you forward. I’m really interested to hear about the legality of the situation.
We would prefer to highlight the voices of the migrants themselves if at all possible while using community partners as secondary resources. Our fear in solely highlighting community leaders is that it would paint a picture that’s too satisfying. We don’t want to leave our viewers with the impression of “These people are being helped by these organizations, so there’s nothing left to do. All is well.” We also don’t want to misrepresent what migrants are facing by allowing a third party to speak for them. We want to introduce the issues from the voices of those who are facing them head-on. While we do want to give recognition to those who are already tackling the issues through their respective organizations, we do not want to leave out those who fall between the cracks. We want to expose those cracks in the system and make people aware that while some work is being done, there is a lot more that still needs to be addressed.

Finding individuals who are willing to participate has been extremely difficult for us, as well. As you pointed out, the political climate is really exacerbating the already difficult process of gathering interviewees. Their apprehension is completely warranted, I just hope it’s something we’re able to overcome soon. Regardless, you and Cristal are both very driven, so I know your project will turn out great.
